Clark County Building Official Appointed
County Manager Yolanda King announced today that she has appointed Jim Gerren as the Clark County Building Official and the director of the Building Department, effective Tuesday, April 5.
The appointment of Gerren is slated to be ratified by the Clark County Commission April 19. Gerren replaces Jerry Stueve, who is retiring after more than five years in the position.
Gerren has worked in the Building Department since 2004 and has served as assistant director since 2019. He started with the department as a fire protection engineer and promoted to manager of plan examination in 2016-2019. Gerren worked for about 3 ½ years in the private sector, managing the day-to-day technical operations for a consulting engineering office. He is certified by the International Code Council as a Certified Building Official and is a licensed professional engineer in fire protection engineering in the state of Nevada. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.
King made the appointment after completing final interviews. Finalists also participated in employee town hall meetings that included internal County department stakeholders. Feedback also was sought from local development community partners.
“The Clark County Building Department performs an important public safety oversight role on the Las Vegas Strip and across our community,” said King. “I believe Mr. Gerren’s experience, professionalism, and ability to collaborate to resolve issues position him well to lead the department at a time when community development and the department’s workload are growing fast.”
The Clark County Building Department (CCBD) has an operating budget of approximately $36 million and a staff of 161 full-time and 15 part-time positions. The department is responsible for ensuring public safety in the built environment by regulating the design and construction of all buildings and structures in Clark County. CCBD issues building permits and conducts inspections for all new construction and remodel work in Clark County. In 2021, CCBD issued more than 60,000 building permits and conducted over 240,000 inspections.

Gerren follows in the footsteps of Stueve, who was director of the department since February 2017 and was director of the County’s Real Property Management Department before that.
