Officials Discuss Safety Preps for Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Race Week Event
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Undersheriff Andrew Walsh, Clark County Commission Vice Chairman William McCurdy II and Las Vegas Grand Prix Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs Lori Nelson-Kraft held a news conference today to discuss safety and security for the upcoming FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX on the Las Vegas Strip and resort corridor. Representatives from the Clark County Fire Department, the Southern Nevada Regional Transportation Commission, and other stakeholders also participated to discuss various restrictions and plans that will be in effect during race week.
“Clark County is proud to partner with Metro and many agencies and organizations to host this year’s Formula 1 race on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Commissioner McCurdy. “It takes months of planning and coordination to host major events like this, and public safety is always our top priority. We appreciate the hard work of our dedicated staff and talented hospitality workforce to make Las Vegas the best place in the world to showcase entertainment and sporting events.”
“We have spent countless hours, with all our partners here today, planning for the safety of the spectators, drivers, and pedestrians on the Strip during the race,” said Undersheriff Walsh. “We will do all this while also ensuring the rest of the community stays safe and accessible.”
Like New Year’s Eve and other special events, the public is advised that during race week events and activities starting Wednesday, Nov. 20 through Sunday morning, Nov. 24, until roads reopen each day, the local special event ordinance will be in effect to protect public safety. The ordinance prohibits possession of glass bottles along the Strip and resort corridor areas as well as oversized purses and bags larger than 12 by 6, strollers and carts, backpacks, coolers, briefcases and luggage. Additional items are prohibited in the event race zones by event organizers that are listed on the event’s website. The list includes flags, banners, signs or promotional materials, noisemakers and horns, chairs and stools, and animals other than service animals.
“We’re thrilled to be welcoming Formula 1 fans from around the world to enjoy all Las Vegas has to offer and once again put Las Vegas on a global stage,” said Nelson-Kraft. “We are grateful for the incredible partnerships, planning, and collaboration with our public safety agencies and Clark County to ensure Las Vegas hosts a safe, secure, and spectacular race week.”
Throughout race week, agencies will be monitoring traffic and race events. Commuters are encouraged to opt-in to a free SMS service by texting “F1LV” to 31996 to receive traffic notifications and related updates. Other important resources include:
