Clark County Public Arts Presents the 23rd Annual Life in Death: Dia de los Muertos Juried Exhibition
Clark County’s Office of Public Art presents the juried exhibition Life in Death: Dia de los Muertos at the 23rd Life in Death Festival held at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Drive. The Exhibition will be on display from October 10 through November 23, and the festival will be held on November 1 and 2 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. An artist reception will be held on November 1 starting at 4 p.m. with an awards announcement at 5 p.m.
This is an exhibition about Día de los Muertos and how people face death, either with humor or remembrance. The imagery of Día de los Muertos is vibrant and recognizable. Some artists use this visual library to remember the people important to them or tell their cultural stories. Other artists choose to go a nontraditional approach and share their memories with the audience in ways they see fit. Arlene Alvarez, Special Assistant to City of Las Vegas Councilwoman Olivia Díaz, juried this exhibition. She was involved in mounting Day of the Dead altars at the Mexican Cultural Institute in D.C. and with the Las Vegas Ward 3 office and shares a lot of knowledge on the traditional holiday of Día de los Muertos.
Gift certificates will be awarded to best in Show and two Honorable Mentions from each category:
- Experienced – Best in Show: $300, Honorable Mentions: $150;
- Amateur – Best in Show: $200, Honorable Mentions: $100; and
- Youth - Best in Show: $100, Honorable Mentions: $50
Gift certificates are only valid in person at any Desert Art Supplies location. Awards will be distributed to artists in attendance at the exhibition reception.
The exhibition will be on display in the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center's gallery from Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
