As you consider your pathway to adoption, you may want to consider adopting a child from foster care who may qualify for Adoption Assistance Programs. Adoption Assistance Programs were designed by the State and Federal governments to encourage families to adopt children in foster care with special needs. There are four areas the programs cover: medical coverage, limited reimbursement of adoption related costs, social services and financial assistance. 

If you foster first and work directly with Department of Family Services, your specialists will be able to assist you in navigating through the assistance programs available to you. Those families seeking adoption through a private agency may also qualify and consult with the agency prior to finalizing the adoption.
