Maria Arango, Sam Davis, Vicky Richardson, and Sergio Checko Salgado each had their work chosen for the projects fourth year (2004). Photos by Davis and Salgado have been enlarged and applied to county vans, used by Parks and Recreation for field trips. A woodcut by Arango has been applied to Parks and Community Services large transport truck, which also travels widely. A painting by Richardson has been applied to the countys mobile stage unit, the first time the stage has been decorated with art. Her work will be seen at countless County music and dance shows and festivals.
Maria Arango has two degrees from UNLV. She has worked in drawing, but is now dedicated to making woodcuts and engraving prints. She has been invited to the country's nine best-recognized fine art festivals, winning many awards. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum, Princeton University, the University of Kansas and the Museum of New Art in Detroit. Her winning woodcut is of a desert landscape.
Sam Davis is working on his Masters Degree in fine art in photography at UNLV. He has a B.F.A. with highest honors in creative photography from the University of Florida. His work has been exhibited extensively in Las Vegas and Florida, winning several awards.
Sergio Checko Salgado is a graduate of Las Vegas High School who studied commercial, studio and product photography at the Colorado Institute of Art. In 2001 he received a grant from the Nevada Arts Council to photograph the Day of the Dead celebrations in Oaxaca, Mexico. The work is on permanent display at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum. He snapped his winning photograph of children in a small village in Mexico.
Vicky Richardson earned her M.A. in art education at the University of Chicago, her B.A. at Fisk. She taught art for 16 years in Clark County schools and is the resident and executive director of Left of Center Gallery. She has won two Governors Art Awards and the Afro-American Cultural Service Award, and she is a Ford Foundation Fellow.
The project is funded in part by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
