The Clark County Desert Conservation Program, through implementation of the MSHCP, conducts actions to ensure survivability of covered species in the wild. These actions include research, acquisition of sensitive habitats, habitat restoration, public information and education, the Wild Desert Tortoise Assistance Line, and installation and maintenance of fencing along roadways to reduce tortoise mortality. The Desert Conservation Program uses the proceeds from the sale of the desert tortoise license plate to continue funding conservation actions and research projects that benefit desert tortoises and their habitat.

Proceeds from the sale of the “Desert Tortoise” license plate will also benefit the Mojave Max Education Program. The Mojave Max Education Program was created in 2000 in an effort to spread the message of conservation to children through Mojave Max assemblies and individual classroom programs that reach an average of 5,000 students per year. The assemblies include appearances by a tortoise
educator who discusses desert tortoise biology, life cycle of the desert tortoise, and general facts about desert tortoises; a weather educator who discusses Mojave Desert weather, which plays an important part in Mojave Max’s emergence; and the costumed Mojave Max mascot.

This license plate provides an opportunity for Nevada residents to contribute to conservation of desert tortoises and to show you respect, protect and enjoy our desert.
